About Alexander Brown

Alexander Brown was born 1810 in Leith, Scotland. He was known in Samoa as Tuimanu’a, the holder of a high ranking title. This was confirmed by a letter written by Mata’afa in 1882. We know he was residing in Ti’avea late 1859, although he may have possibly arrived in Samoa sometime during 1840 as a John Brown (his son?) was born April 1847. Alexander lived at Ti’avea in district of Aleipata most of his life and had many wives and offsprings. He had families in Fagaloa and Tiavea and maybe other villages too. Some of his wife’s names are Anaseini Fesolai daughter of Salai Fesolai; Fa’asasaluomalo daughter of Tauaaletoa from Lona; Vaiomanu; Faleamu; and was registered married to Ainoama Su’a at the British Consulate in Apia in 1877.

Tuimanu’a Alexander Brown died on the 10th of August 1896 at the age of 86, and was buried at Ti’avea his last permanent residence. The funeral was officiated by Elder Opapo of the Mormon church.

Alexander has hundreds of descendants today, and many of them have been searching for their ancestors and their palagi forefather, Alexander. Please feel free to comment below, and if you know your pedigree up to Alexander, and any stories handed down you may like to share it with us.

Malo lava ma alofa atu,
Alexander Brown descendants.

  1. Hi Christian this is great. Hope we get lots of replies!! Elva

    • I am Fonoti John Pete lo Pedro Brown. My father is Fonoti John Brown, the son of Matautia Fonoti John Brown. My grandfather MatautiaFonotiJohn Brown,s parents AnaVaelua Brown and Tafea Maioa Matatufu Lotofaga. His’grandfather is Alexander Brown.I live in NewZealand for about thirty seven years now.

      • I am a 3x grandson of Tui Manu’a Alexander Brown and Anasieni Fesolai through the Salageta/Polamalu Taumaloto/Uanona line. The Brown family is big and multicultures but I am confused as to whom exactly are true heirs of the Brown name mainly through the traditional male line in contrast to the female line who normally take up the name of the husband’s family they are married to. I will appreciate any input into this matter.

  2. Hi Christian

  7. Hi,

I found your website very interesting, am trying to trace back where my last name brown came from, do you have a family tree we could view, thanks

    • I also would like to view a family tree. John Brown was my grandmothers grandfather Afulilo Brown.

      Thank you.

  8. Talofa Chris, I just want to say to you. I’m Saute Sapolu,Jr, Malu’s son. I read and see what you are talking about Alexander John Brown. I’m very happy that God Jah Jehovah is very good to all of us that search for our Royal Family connection in England. I’m very bless with America giving me the straight answer to find our family connection and also taking me to see the Queen Victoria’s bedroom in the 47 bedrooms “shack” if may keep it simple in my language with “respect” to our “God white man” ancestors in Great Britain. Yes “uso”, this is God’s work. No one will ever understand it because he is hidden and now found. As for me I don’t have any feeling against the hidden of old man Alexander John Brown’s history. I believe worldly government is not always perfect like God Jah Jehovah’s Kingdom Government. The spirit or “ATUA”, which it is the name of our Mr, Brown’s east of Upolu highland District and it under Great Britain’s Conservation. I think you can see the now how the history and the foundation of Samoa became as a foreigner policy in our natives family side of life and became as Government Of Samoa under the one big family, United Nations. It is very clear cut to understand it. I’m happy to share and help you to clear the clouds of the moon so it shine for the our “aiga” to understand and they may pursue careers in politics in Samoa without the darkness of the night. We still have a responsibility to respect and do what we have to do to keep our world in Peace. It is our Mr and Mrs Brown interests to love the children of the world keep the faith in the goodness of our “ATUA”. Well, Brown “uso”, again, thanks so much for your work. I know I never replied on your site before, but feel very proud of what you are doing for the generations to come and their clear understanding in their future search. Samoa & the world will also know educating our children about their histories, is the beginning of understanding that we all comes from Adam & Eve and the government is the snake. Take care and have a great life. Thanks again “uso”. God bless. Soifua.

  9. Malo lava Saute Sapolu..thank you for your contribution. Likewise and hope all is well with you and family. God bless!

    Thanks again bro!

  10. Hi everyone! this is an awesome story of Alexandra Brown History. And this is where exactually where my family came from, I dont know much about it but I heard abit about it, so i wont go too far but Ill stick up with the story I heard.

  11. malo lava ,Its wonderful to know where your last, name original from,im the line from Jane Brown from Lona Fagaloa,we got a land there where Alexandra Brown arrived and lived. My grandfather Savila Brown his name is under that land,my mother family they call us Tuimanua i said to myself why, well i understand now is Tuimanua Alexandra Brown from Lona Fagaloa . malo lava thanks for everybody contribution Uele Savila Brown from Fagaloa.

  12. You are very welcome Christian. I have a lot of respect for the ‘King Of Samoa’ that’s Fonoti and the ‘Aiga Salevalsi’ of Samoa. I hope the almighty will lead the ‘blind ones’ to understand the ‘truth’ and respect it, because we all have the Brown bloodline and we all can fight for the land that do belong to everyone in the big picture of the Royal Family Of The Browns also we must know, there’s one who holds that ‘key’ and that is Tupuola Tauapuaa John Brown, Jr and then Malu Brown. Now Malu Brown’s son Saute Sapolu,Jr is the next to look after the history of the Royal Family in Lona Fagaloa if that will be accept with the views of all members of the lineage especailly my uncle Leulu Lole and his children. Yes I’m Saute Sapolu,Jr, that’s me myself and I. Don’t get me wrong or have wrong idea about what I see in my life as a Grandson of Tupuola Tauapua, I don’t want to chase anyone off lands, and don’t want to be someone that owns the land. I’m just someone that will straight up the records before the outside world grab the lands and what you all greed people in our family twisted in the past and twist it right back into your faces before you know it. My point is, if I get to be the next Tupuola, please I don’t want your ‘taufaasese'(false documentations). I know the ‘truth’ and I love my history with my grandpa Tupuola Tauapuaa John Brown, Jr. I love my country and love all my people in Samoa and around the globe. Why? Because I understand what’s going on in Lona, Fagaloa. I understand why my other brothers killed my other brother and I don’t want that to ever happen again in my village Lona, Fagaloa. Don’t let the ‘evil white man’ kill your trust in God, Let yourself be the ‘God White Man’, ‘The Tui Manua’, the man with love and Mataafa Iosefo understand him well and accept him to be his own brother and as a best friend. As for me coming from my native ‘Aiga Sa-Polu’ the father’s side of the family that hold the ‘warrior’ name Manu Saute. I realize in that period of our ancesstors life, we were ONE to fight the UNJUSTICE from the ‘evil white men’. So lets not confuse the situation with who hold the ‘key’ to the structure of what our Royal Family stands for. I have a lot of respect for Mataafa Iosefo and our native bloodline. Now to keep our world in Samoa with respect and honor with loyalty to our ‘ATUA’ Foundation, lets keep our ‘faith’ in our ‘GOD’ IE O VA. Do not start war within our own family, do not kill your own brother or your own sister just because you ‘think’ you can take all lands and keep it in your control without the ‘key’ from the structure of the Royal Family. If we don’t obey it, then our judgement time will come from our heavenly father above, Jehovah God. God Bless You All. Soifua.

    • Talofa!

When I came to Samoa in 1999 my grandmother Losa Ana Malia Malae Taisia used to always ask me if I wanted to take her fathers last name Brown seeing as I wasn’t born in Samoa. I assumed she was joking and thought nothing of it. After talking to the Uncles though and researching a bit found out, my grandma comes from Ti’avea, Aleipata and her fathers name is Taisia Brown, son of Emma Brown. Just want to make sure and would love to read your book and talk more.

    • I’d love to read your book! My great grandfather is kaisia, son of Emma. I’m limited to what I know just what my gramdma and great uncle Kia in tiavea have told me and what I’ve read on Christians websites. Be interested to know more.

  29. Alexander brown. My great-great-great-great grandfather. Thank you for sharing this

  30. The daughter that Alexander Brown brought to Samoa with him from his earlier marriage in Scotland (widowed I understand) was Jane Brown, my great great grand mother. She married Tupuola (Tupola?) Auvale from Lona and one of their children was my great grand mother Maina Brown (also used surname Leofa). I would love to be able to confirm this information and learn more about my great great grand parents. Alexander had many wives and many children so I guess I have lots of relations through connection to their half sister, my great great grandmother Jane Brown. My name is William and I live in Wellington NZ. Love to hear from you at bill.naik@gmail.com.

    • Hi William did your or has your Family Have a shop in Arakura Wanuiomata Wellington NZ My Name is Siu Brown My Gr8 Gr8 Grandfather is Alexander Tuimanu`a Brown My Gr8 Gr8 Grandmother is Faleamu

  31. Is there any more information in terms of Alexander Browns background? How native was he in terms of Scots blood? Were his parents actually Scottish or were they immigrants? And it says that he was a widower. Any info on his previous marriage in scotland before coming to samoa?

  32. Hi,
I am wondering whether these Browns married a woman from Lotofaga and took on the Fonoti title which found its way to the village of Vavau where the title Fonoti is used there too as it seems they (he) may have married a girl from Vavau also.

  33. Tuimanu’a is not the name of a high chief. It is the name of a king. I find it hard to believe that he held the title of Tuimanu’a as I descend from the royal family and Alexander Brown was never a holder of the crown.
